ANGEL ISLAND, CA - FEBRUARY 6, 2009: Angel Island park ranger Dave Matthews walks along bell monument which marks the base of the pier where detainees were brought to the Island from 1849 to 1949. The pier itself has disintigrated. After being closed for 5 years of renovation, the Angel Island Immigration Station will be re-opened to the public featuring poems scratched into the wooden walls by Chinese who were held there for health and documentation reasons in the late 1800's and early 1900's on Friday FEBRUARY 6, 2009. The "Immigration Station" bell bears the date 1910. (Bob Chamberlin/Los Angeles Times)
