Very popular during the Mughul period, the seni rabab at one point came close to extinction, but in recent years has made a comeback. Guru Nanak is said to have had tremendous love for the instrument. He wrote some 500 compositions, which are all set to music. Mardana, his traveling companion was a rebab player. It is the rising interest in gurmat sangeet (Sikh religious music) which is primarily responsible for the reawakening in interest in this instrument
