The shape and decorative pattern of this sword are typical of the Sikh misl period, in the late 18th century. The inscription inside the handle reads:
“Almighty be with you, Santji Singh, December 1886”

Among these portraits of the family and court of Ranjit Singh, look for the white-bearded Maharaja and the Europeans who trained his military. Painted ivories such as these were often given to visiting dignitaries.

Unique to India, the katar was designed to penetrate armor. The blade is thicker near the point, making it extremely strong. In India, many men wore it tucked into a sash.
