Taking Heritage into the 21st Century:
The Sikh Contribution

At The Library of Congress Washington, DC - June 18 & 19, 2009

The Kaur Foundation is hosting the National Sikh Conference at the Library of Congress on Thursday, June 18th and Friday, June 19th, 2009. Never before have so many prominent scholars, historians, writers and artists gathered under one roof.

The Sikh Collection Initiative
, it is a co-collaboration between the Kaur Foundation and the East Asian Division of the Library of Congress. This Collection will include the Library's first volumes in the Punjabi language, as well as the works of scholars who have written on the Sikhs. This Collection focus is on the many books that are out-of-print, but are vital in preserving the Sikh heritage. "How does a community document its presence in the most prestigious Library in the world? How does a community make sure that its voice is heard and recorded?" asked Inni Kaur Dhingra, a Kaur Foundation member who helped coordinate the Collection.

The 2-day conference celebrates the historic addition of more than 100 rare volumes to the Library of Congress's South and Southeast Asia Collection.

Thursday's Schedule of Events - 1:00 PM The Conference starts with "Portraits of Courage" a presentation by Pushpindar Singh, Executive Editor of Nishaan Magazine, and Dr. Kenneth X. Robbins, a board Director of the Library of Congress' Asian Division Friends Society.

The next session "Achievements of Extraordinary Sikh Women in Art" will feature acclaimed Sikh artists Amrit and Rabindra Singh (The Singh Twins) and Arpana Caur.

On the evening of June 18th, the Kaur Foundation will host a dinner reception in the Great Hall of the Library of Congress. The evening highlight will be the U.S. book launch of S. Patwant Singh and Jyoti Rai's book, Empire of the Sikhs. The authors will be present.

A photo exhibit entitled "A Journey" will be on display that evening. Tracing the Sikh immigrant experience in America during the last 100 years, it will feature rare archival photographs, as well as contemporary portraits of Sikhs by photographers Fiona Aboud, Gurumustuk Singh and Jagatjoti Singh Khalsa.
