Jasprit Singh is a professor in the Applied Physics Program and in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
Jasprit grew up in New Delhi where his parents settled after moving from Pakistan. His father was from
Gujranwalla, now in Pakistan, and his mother was from Wara Bhai Ka, near Faridkot in the Punjab.
Jasprit’s father, S. Gurcharn Singh, was a man of great conviction and lived the Sikh principles of truth and equality. His lifestyle and choices have been a guiding force for
Jasprit. Jasprit’s mother, Gursharan Kaur, while born on a farm, pursued education and earned a Master’s degree from Punjab University. She was a life-long educationalist and believed strongly in education as an end in itself.
Jasprit came to the University of Chicago in 1975 where he earned a Ph.D. in Physics in 1980. He has worked at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles (1980-1983), Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio (1983-1985), and at the University of Michigan (1985-present). He has also been a visiting professor at the University of Tokyo and at the University of California in Santa Barbara.
Jasprit’s research focuses on advanced smart materials for high performance devices for information processing. His research has led to about 300 publications in international
journals, 15 Ph.D. graduates, and 8 technical books.
Jasprit believes that just as the scientific method has led to great breakthroughs and benefits in the physical world, the Sikh method gifted by the Gurus provides great benefits to the spirit. It is up to the Sikh to exploit this gift and to share it with others.
