He has been all there. He loves inventing things only to help people. With 120 patents to his name, Dr. Narinder Singh Kapany is better known as the father of the fiber optics. Thanks to his inventions, today we have several biomedical, laser, solar energy, and pollution monitoring instruments. In today’s virtual world, here’s the man whom we need to thank for the high-speed wide-spread internet.
“How can I be satisfied without helping others?”
The publisher of over 10 scientific papers and four books on opto-electronics and entrepreneurship, Dr. Kapany remains instrumental in promoting education and art, thanks to the values embedded by his mother since his childhood. Serving as the Founder Chairman of the Sikh Foundation, he remained pivotal in publishing academia, and arts. He recently has organized a convention to commemorate the golden jubilee with the theme of Inspire, Educate, and Engage. As a celebratory mark of 50 successful years of the foundation. He also marshalled NIRBHAU Women Awards to honor the steel of indomitable women, grace of their demeanor, all of them embodied Sikh Values.
“We, together, enjoyed some hobbies.” Dr. Kapany credits his late wife, Satinder Kaur Kapany, for encouraging him all through his endeavors. He says that their bond remains stronger till date. They shared same thoughts for uplifting the society with education.
“I did the work I felt for.” Dr. Kapany has been honored with many awards including the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman 2004 (Government of India) and Excellence 2000 Award (USA, Pan-Asian American Chamber of Commerce) for his path-breaking work. He has earned a fellowship of the British Royal Academy of Engineering, the Optical Society of America, and American Association for the Adanvcement of Science.
