This fall, the Sikh Foundation partnered with UCSC Professor Arshinder Kaur to launch our first series of online Punjabi classes—and the response was inspiring. Over the course of the program, students aged 11 to 67 came together each week to learn the basics of Punjabi. From the Gurmukhi script and grammar to everyday vocabulary, the classes offered a welcoming introduction to the language while also weaving in the cultural context that makes Punjabi so vibrant.
Although these were non-credit community classes, they were modeled on the Punjabi language curriculum used by the University of California, ensuring both accessibility for beginners and the kind of structure that makes for meaningful progress. Combined with Professor Kaur’s engaging teaching style, this framework created an environment where learners of all ages felt supported and encouraged.
The program was a true success. Participants shared how meaningful it was to learn alongside such a diverse group, spanning generations and life experiences. With classes recorded each week, even those with busy schedules could keep pace and stay connected.
We are excited to announce that a new set of classes will begin in January 2026, once again taught by Professor Kaur. This next series will continue our commitment to making Punjabi language learning accessible, engaging, and meaningful for students of all ages and backgrounds.
Stay tuned for registration details later this year—we look forward to welcoming both new and returning students for another enriching season of Punjabi language and culture.
